A refrigerated shipping container — usually called a “reefer” — is a steel cargo container with a built-in cooling unit. The compressor, evaporator coils, and insulation are integrated into one end of the container, so the unit is self-contained and ready to plug in.
Running vs Non-Running Reefers
Reefer containers come in two conditions on the used market:
- Running: The cooling unit is operational. The compressor cycles, the unit holds temperature, and you can plug it in and use it for cold storage.
- Non-running: The cooling unit is not functional. The container itself is still insulated and structurally sound — just no active cooling. Non-running reefers are sold at a lower price for buyers who want an insulated steel storage unit (without active refrigeration).
If you need active cold storage, ask specifically for a running reefer when you call. Running condition costs more but is the only option for actual refrigeration.
Standard Reefer Size
The most common reefer size we sell is 40ft high cube:
- Exterior: 40′ long × 8′ wide × 9’6″ tall
- Interior: ~37′ usable length (the cooling unit takes up about 3 feet at one end)
- Interior height: ~8’2″ usable (insulation reduces ceiling height)
- Capacity: ~2,200 cubic feet of cold/insulated storage
Smaller 20ft reefers exist on the market but are far less common in Texas inventory.
Power Requirements
Reefer cooling units typically run on 3-phase 460-volt power. They are not plug-and-play with standard residential 120V outlets. Before buying a running reefer, verify you have appropriate electrical service at your site or budget for an electrician to install one. Some buyers run reefers off industrial generators on remote sites.

What Reefers Are Not
A reefer is not a freezer warehouse — they are intended for cold storage in the 32°F to 70°F range, depending on the unit. They will hold below freezing on some units, but commercial-grade walk-in freezer applications usually need purpose-built equipment.
Reefer vs Insulated Container
If you only need insulated storage (no active cooling), a non-running reefer or a dedicated insulated container may be a better fit and lower cost. We carry insulated options as well — call to ask.
